A Transatlantic Art Contest Celebrating The Statue of Liberty’s 125th Birthday
In celebration of the Statue of Liberty’s 125th birthday (October 28th, 2011), the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, in collaboration with the U.S. National Park Service, Statue of Liberty National Monument, and the American Association of Teachers of French are hosting a Franco-American Transatlantic contest for students in grades pre-K to 12.

This year’s topic will be:
The Statue of Liberty and the Environment.

3 Grand- Prize Winners (for individual entries only): 3 pairs of round-trip tickets, courtesy of Air France

All primary and secondary school students in the United States and in France are eligible to participate. Students are allowed to submit one individual entry only. Group projects are accepted as separate entries and separate from individual projects.

This year, the National French Week Contest is going GREENER THAN EVER.

Priority should be given to the use of RECYCLED or/and ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY materials.
Art Works can be outdoor projects such as wall paintings, mosaics, sculptures, etc (Please check with the local property owners, playground and park supervisors, etc before installing your work). The contest organizers cannot be held responsible for property damages.

ALL entries must be submitted ELECTRONICALLY (entries may be submitted in French or English). Post your videos, photos or texts on the contest’s website: http://statueofliberty.ning.com/
Please add a written or oral description of your work. And include your login name and your grade in the title of your work.

Students are divided into four categories according to their grade:

Pre-K to 3rd Grade
4th -6th Grade
7th-9th Grade
10th-12th Grade

1. Build a sculpture or a mosaic or paint a wall or decorate a fence YOU MAY ONLY USE RECYCLED OR GREEN MATERIALS

2. Create a song or video about the Statue—may be performed in French or English (entries may not exceed 5 minutes in length).

3. Submit a picture/photograph or design a poster that captures the essence of the Statue and her Greener than Ever motto (images may be created in programs such as Paint, PhotoShop, Publisher, etc.).

4. Write an essay in which you answer the question: What energy should be used to light the Statue’s torch 25 years from now? (800 words maximum—may be written in French or English).

5. Design an outfit inspired by the Statue’s Green than Ever motto. YOU MAY ONLY USE RECYCLED OR GREEN MATERIALS.
Note: Please select a model for your outfit and submit photographs of the outfit from various angles for judging. You may want to take a few close-up shots of certain detailed elements of the outfit which might be difficult to see in wider framed photographs.
In addition to the photographs of your outfit, you must submit a detailed list of the materials that you used to create your outfit and the manner in which you assembled it (i.e. glue, sewing machine, safety pins)—300 words maximum.

6. Choreograph a dance that expresses the Statue’s Greener than Ever motto (1- 5 minutes). The dance must be filmed and submitted electronically.
